We found ourselves applying for a position with an old fashioned toyshop named Mr. Keller’s Magic Emporium, where Mr. Keller had left us with a series of tasks and puzzles to solve in one hour. The door locked behind us and we were treated to a shopfront that was odd and looked like it belonged to the turn of the 20th century.

If the description for this room sounds somewhat familiar for readers who have been following this blog for some time, it should. Escape Room Melbourne (ERM) have licensed one of their more successful games out to Escape Room Canberra (ERC), a new escape room venue which opened the start of this month in Australia’s capital. This adaption from Escape Rooms Canberra is as enjoyable as the original, with some special flavour. Read on to find out how!

You all wake up at the same time and don’t know what is happening. Why are you in a hospital? Why is it chaos outside? How did you get in? And hey, how do you get OUT? This was the situation we found ourselves in EscapeXperience’s Amnesia –  a fast paced game where players have 60 minutes to remember who they are and to escape this mysterious predicament.

In this room, you actually know nothing about the story when you start. As you progress, however, you understand more and more about the situation you and your friends are in. You also realize you will have act fast or something bad will occur. However, will you figure out what to do in time?

Escape Room Melbourne (ERM): Surveillance: Division 5 [Review]

  • 90 minute ‘room’
  • Full mobility
  • Fluent English
  • Mobile phone
  • 2-4 players

After playing the Escape Room, we took to Melbourne’s streets to engage in the silent battleground of the Cold War era Surveillance: Division 5. In this mix of an outdoor treasure hunt and an ‘escape room’, players take on the role of ASIO agents who need to locate a rogue surveillance truck in 90 minutes. (For context of overseas readers, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation is the equivalent of the FBI and Department of Homeland Security mixed together (US), MI5 (UK), DGSI (France), BND (Germany), etc.)

Who are the enemy agents? What exactly is a part of this ‘escape room’? This game flips the idea of an escape room as players will have to locate and then break into the truck.

Read on to find out how this game turns some conventional ideas of escape room on their heads!

Escape Room Melbourne (ERM): Escape Room (Flemington) [Review]

ERM has had a pretty good track record at creating immersive rooms which engage players with creative puzzles. We played Kellar’s Magic Emporium and Mine Escape back in November last year as part of an escape room marathon and were extremely impressed with how the rooms were crafted and detailed. Although we wanted to play Escape Room at the Flemington venue as well, it was booked out due to it’s popularity. After finally getting to play it, we can see why this was the case.

The premise of Escape Room is pretty simple and reminds me of Choose Your Own Adventure books: You’ve inherited an old house from a quirky relative, who was a scientist, in the nice suburb of Flemington in Melbourne. After clearing through the backyard, you come across a large mysterious shed with an even more mysterious room which looks like it had been abandoned for 50 years or so. You go in and the door swings shut and locks. You see a letter on the table which explains what’s in store for the next 70 minutes.

Escape Room managed to surprise us even after having played 50 escape rooms and is definitely worth playing. Read on to find out why!

Escape Room Melbourne (ERM): Mine Escape [Review]

You work at a mine and have come on shift and the main office is deserted. No one is around and your workmates go to investigate what is going on. They too disappear and you have around 70 minutes to rescue them and get out!

Mine Escape isn’t your typical escape room and even the plot is pretty original. A mine site incident? I don’t think you’ll see this storyline anywhere else. Escape Room Melbourne (ERM) delivers yet another immersive adventure that surprised us with their creativity despite the seemingly boring setting. Our preconceptions were very wrong and we were very surprised by how well this room played. It gets the first 10 for creativity in our blog for many reasons, so read on more to find why!

Shortly after we made our booking with Escape Room Melbourne (ERM) for Kellar’s Magic Emporium, we received an email with an old newspaper clipping about the return of the great magician Kellar. Reading through this quaint clipping, it looked like Kellar intended to make a comeback following a period of absence. He was also looking for a new assistant and we were invited for a trial. Something doesn’t seem right though….

A month later, we arrive at the magician’s backstage. Strewn around the room are what appear to be magic props for an earlier century. No locks are apparent and the place is neat but there is a certain rawness to it all.

Kellar’s Magic Emporium is the most atmospheric escape room we have played until now and is the first room to score 10 in that category. Want to know more? Keep reading to find out how we were sucked into the game!
