Escape Travel Guide to Sao Paulo, Brazil (2016)

When you ask most people in the world that aren’t from Latin America what they think of Brazil, the response is usually along the lines of parties, crime and jungle, somewhat like this Simpson’s episode. Truth is though, Brazil is the size of Australia and you can find many types of terrain and people within it. Sao Paulo, in particular, is a booming megacity of 11 million with a truly diverse makeup. For example, did you know that it has a Japanese population of around 2 million making it the biggest Japanese city outside Japan? The country has an incredibly diverse society with a rich source of culture and unique style of creativity.

For those who love escape rooms, a small but highly creative escape room industry is emerging from Sao Paulo. With the Olympics underway in Rio de Janeiro, we thought this would be an appropriate time to introduce Sao Paulo’s escape room scene, given that is only 1 hour flight away from Rio. If you are over in Brazil for the Olympics or are headed there in the near future, why not take a look at the escape rooms in Sao Paulo?

Escape 60′ Vila Olímpia: Assassin’s Creed [Review]

In this officially produced Assassin’s Creed spin off, players assume the mantle of being descendants of the secretive Assassins, which are locked in a battle through history against the Templars. As prospective members of this group, players must prove their worth and escape from the room, set within a created memory,  within 60 minutes as a test of their viability. Failure will result in them being stuck in this memory (presumably created within the Animus/Helix for those familiar with this series of games).

Returning back to Brazil for a short time, I (Trapspringer) was intrigued with the idea of an escape room set in one of the most successful gaming franchises in recent years. We decided to embrace our inner Assassin and gave this room a go. Let’s make it clear from the start that no people were killed and no parkour/freerunning was necessary.

Families that escape rooms together stays together, and my beautiful family and I (Pá) were ready to face a third challenge at Escape 60′ Vila Olímpia. This time we opted for the medium-difficulty Rescue Operation. The story is interesting: there is a serial killer in the city, and every night he murders someone at midnight. You were calm at home, until you found out that your cousin, who was visiting from out of town, disappeared. You rush to the hotel where she was last seen. It’s 11pm, so you and the police must hurry to find out what happened to her!

Of all the rooms we played at Escape 60′, Rescue Operation was my favourite. The flow of the game was excellent, puzzles were creative and there was enough for the five of us (mom, dad, sister, brother in law and me) to do. Do you think you would go nuts being locked in a room with your parents for one hour? Well, I’m lucky – I was raised by puzzle lovers! 😀

Escape 60′ Vila Olímpia: Dr. Mortare’s Lab [Review]

  • 4-8 players
  • Very basic Chemistry and Maths

I don´t remember the exact number, but before we were briefed to play the Dr. Mortare’s Lab at Escape 60′, a member of the staff commented it was their hardest room and less than 20% (or was it 15%?) of teams finished it.

It has the typical plot of a ‘mad scientist’ room: Dr. Mortare developed a lethal formula and is threatening to throw it into the water treatment station. Can you imagine how disastrous it can be in São Paulo, a city with 11 million people? You and your team are members of a special division and must find out where the formula is. However, the laboratory if filled with lethal gas that will kill you in 60 minutes.

We had a complicated game, got really close, but did not escape the gas…

Escape 60′ Vila Olímpia: Death Row [Review]

12 years ago, you were unfairly imprisoned for a murder you did not commit and have now been sentenced to death. The jailer will be back in an hour and you will be taken to the electric chair. It is your last chance to escape, and at this point you don´t care about the risks. Only one person has ever managed to escape this prison so far, and you hope to follow his trail to escape the Death Row.

Trapspringer was not there to play this room with me (Pá), but I had great company to try my escape to freedom in this Brazilian challenge: my parents (who had played with us before in Valencia), my sister (who is a PhD in Professor Layton and Picross) and my brother in law (IT specialist). We were chained to each other at the beginning and, for the gamemasters’ amusement, 20 minutes into the game we were still walking around in a very close group. Well, we can´t deny we love each other!
